Laser Eye Surgery Consultation

Working With You to Restore Your Vision

Laser eye surgery is a very common procedure. Thousands of Canadians undergo various forms of laser eye surgery every year. Still, just like any other medical procedure, laser eye surgery may not be the best option for everyone. It’s always a good idea to do some research and ask questions before you make a decision.

Brighton Eyecare is here to answer all of your questions before and after surgery. We will walk you through the entire process, so you can feel comfortable and confident knowing that laser eye surgery is the right decision for you.

Schedule your consultation to find out if you are a good candidate for laser eye surgery.

How Can I Get Laser Eye Surgery?

Laser eye surgery is a popular option because it gives you clearer vision, often without the need for contact lenses or glasses. But surgery may not be the right solution for your unique needs.

Before you can pursue laser eye surgery, you’ll need to schedule a consultation with us. We’ll talk to you about your goals and expectations, answer any questions, and perform a comprehensive evaluation. During the evaluation, we’ll make sure there aren’t any underlying health issues that might make you ineligible for laser eye surgery.

Once we’ve answered all your questions and confirmed that laser eye surgery is a good solution for you, we’ll refer you to a trustworthy ophthalmologist (eye surgeon).

Will Laser Eye Surgery Work for Me?

Your eligibility for laser eye surgery will depend on several unique health factors. However, you may benefit from laser eye surgery if:

Common Laser Eye Procedures

PRK

PRK was the first form of laser eye surgery, and it’s still commonly used today.

The procedure is performed by an ophthalmologist, who will use a specially-programmed laser. The laser will reshape your corneas, removing excess tissue until it has achieved the ideal shape.

Once the surgery is complete, the surgical team will place clear contact lenses over your corneas. These lenses are non-prescription, and function as bandages to protect your eyes while they heal.

Your vision may be blurry at first; however, it should stabilize within a few days.

LASIK is the world’s most popular type of laser eye surgery. Generally speaking, it heals faster than PRK due to its “flap method.”

Rather than reshaping the surface of the cornea, LASIK reshapes the inner layers of the cornea. The procedure starts by cutting a small flap in the outer layers of the cornea. The flap is then folded back, revealing the middle layers of the cornea. The ophthalmologist then uses the laser to reshape the cornea from the middle.

Once they’ve achieved the desired shape, the ophthalmologist will replace the flap, so the freshly reshaped cornea is protected while it heals.

SMILE is sometimes called the “flapless LASIK” because it reshapes the middle layers of the cornea without using the flap method.

The ophthalmologist starts by using a special laser to cut a lens-shaped disc out of the middle layers of the cornea. Then, they will use the same laser to make a tiny incision on the surface of the cornea. This incision is sometimes called the “keyhole” because it’s so small.

Finally, the ophthalmologist will slide the disk out of your eye, through the keyhole incision. Removing this piece of tissue reshapes your cornea from the inside, correcting your vision and leaving only a minuscule opening on the surface of the eye.
